09/29/2016, Yesterday evening, the winners of the 36th Leica Oskar Barnack Award were announced at Berlin’s St. Elisabeth Church. The event took place as part of the European Month of Photography. The Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2016 exhibition, comprising the works of the 12 finalists, also opened last night at the New School for Photography in Berlin.
More than 3200 photographers from 108 countries participated in this year’s contest. Out of the entirety of submitted works, an international jury of high-ranking industry experts selected twelve finalists and two winners.
The main award goes to French photographer Scarlett Coten for her project Mectoub. She stands to receive a monetary prize of 25.000 euros as well as a Leica camera system to the value of 10.000 euros.
The newcomer award goes to French photographer Clémentine Schneidermann for her series The Unbearable, the Sadness and the Rest. She will receive the sum of 10.000 euros along with a Leica camera system worth 10.000 euros.
In addition, the finalists each receive 2500 euros prize money, as does the winner of the Leica Oskar Barnack Public Award, voted for by the I-shot-it online community. This year there was a tie vote, resulting in two winners: Fulvio Bugani with his series „Soul“ y Sombras and Stéphane Lavoué with The North East Kingdom.
