From Hamburg out into the world

01/12/2017, The Jenisch Haus in Hamburg is presenting an exhibition of pictures by Leica photographer Leonore Mau (1916-2013), up until April 23, 2017. The retrospective, titled Die Fotografin Leonore Mau – Von Hamburg in die Welt (From Hamburg out into the World), brings together the many facets of the photographer’s work and is the result of a collaboration with the S. Fischer Foundation and the F.C. Gundlach Foundation.

Among other places, her pictures were taken in the USA, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Haiti, Venezuela and Brazil, Senegal and France. Her journeys, however, always began in Hamburg, where she purchased her first Leica on installments in 1950.

Her numerous reportages and series produced around the world appeared in great German magazines such as Stern, Spiegel, Geo and Zeit. Mau would have been 100 years old in 2016 and, on the occasion of that jubilee, the exhibition with its 130 photographs offers a comprehensive glimpse at her whole body of work.
