A JOURNEY TO CUBA

08/18/2017, The Fabian & Claude Walter Gallery in Zurich retraces sixty years of Cuba’s eventful history with a selection of outstanding vintage and contemporary photographs. ‘A Journey to Cuba’ opens on 24 August 2017.

Both Fidel Castro and Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara recognised the value of photography for propaganda purposes. In addition to Cuban photographer Alberto Korda (1928–2001), who accompanied the revolutionary elite from 1959 to 1968, international artists such as Magnum photographer René Burri (1933–2014) were also given the opportunity to document the events of the post-revolutionary period.

The exhibition also features the work of internationally renowned photographers René Peña (*1957) and Juan Carlos Alom (*1964), who capture the surreality of everyday life in contemporary Cuba, and question the values of a society borne out of a utopian concept. Their images are the exact opposite of the idealistic photographs created during and immediately after the revolution.

The selection also includes works by young Cuban artists such as Adrián Fernández Milanes (*1984), who seeks to convey the hierarchical structures within Cuba’s society and history in conceptually charged images.

Exhibition period: 25 August to 23 September 2017.
