Across the River

08/13/2017, From August 31 to October 8, 2017, the Galerie für Fotografie in Hanover is hosting Quer zum Strom (Across the River), with works by Jo Röttger. The exhibition is not only titled Quer zum Strom because one of the Hamburg photographer’s series carries the same title. He spent two years taking photos from the same point in Blankenese, looking across the Elbe towards Finkenwerder. A good century of sailing history parades by in his pictures, including what seems like every possible type of vessel that has ever left a dock.

The exhibition at the GAF includes Elbe river landscapes, Wilson’s Texan homeland from Wilson’s World, and landscape tableaux from Landscapes & Memory. The very personal pictures of Andrzej Wirth fall somewhat outside the general framework. Jo Röttger accompanied the 90 year-old friend on a sentimental journey into the past in South Carolina, where Wirth once spent happy days. These pictures by Röttger are a mixture of portrait and landscape photography.
