Araki. Tokyo

11/13/2017, The exhibition Araki. Tokyo will be open to viewers at Munich’s Pinakothek der Moderne from 26 October 2017 to 4 March 2018.

Nobuyoshi Araki, born 1940 as the son of a shoe salesman, is one of the most prolific and provocative photographers of our time. Since the 1960s, the Japanese artist has been assimilating the world around him, obsessively and on a daily basis, with the aid of a camera – a trait that has culminated in almost 500 book publications to date.

His work encompasses a wide spectrum of topics – spanning from his famously controversial, highly erotic depictions of women all the way to artificial still lifes, botanical portraits, documentary-style pictures of everyday life, architectural photography, as well as the almost diary-like, deeply personal images of himself and his late wife, Yoko.

The exhibition for the first time combines the single-edition prints of the Tokyo series with other iconic projects from the early years of Araki’s career. Among them are extensive series such as The Past (1972) and The Days We Were Happy (1972), the extremely rare Xerox Photo Albums, as well as long sold-out books of the artist’s work from the early seventies. A comprehensive programme of talks and film screenings accompanies the exhibition.
