09/07/2015, The Japanese photographer Tsutomu Yamagata wins the first Emaho Foundation’s Emerging Asian Photography Grant for his work, Ten Disciples. To complete the project, the photographer visited the Tamagawa Baths in the Akita Prefecture. The baths are reputed to have medicinal properties, and cancer patients from all over the country travel there hoping that the warm springs and radioactive stones will cure them.
The Emerging Asian Photography Grant is being awarded for the first time in 2015. The Emaho Fundation has created the award with the aim of supporting Asian photographers: it comes with 5000 dollars in prize money. In addition, the winner has the chance to produce a planned project with a Leica M from the LFI loan pool. Afterwards, the images may be published in LFI or in the blog. The work will also be exhibited at the New Art Exchange in Nottingham, in the UK.
