Images in Conflict

04/22/2017, The exhibition Images in Conflict will be showing at the Galerie für Fotografie (GAF) in Hanover from 18 May to 18 June 2017.

How are war and conflict presented in our media-dominated world? How is it possible to find truth among different perspectives? What narrative approach must the ‘picture-makers’ of today take in order to reach a public audience?

Images in Conflict explores these questions through the work of contemporary photographers and artists whose approach goes beyond current news reporting. The exhibition highlights the changing functions of both stills and video imagery in conflict situations, as well as addressing the role of the media in different areas of warfare. The featured photographers are Edmund Clark, Christoph Bangert, Ziyah Gafi, Tim Hetherington, Harun Farocki, Dona Abboud and Armin Smailovic.

On 17 and 18 May, the exhibition is complemented by a symposium of internationally renowned guest speakers, among them Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin, Emma Daly, Santiago Lyon, Stephen Mayes, Geert van Kesteren and Donovan Wylie.
