Leica Hall of Fame Award

10/21/2017, On 15 November 2017, Leica Camera AG honours the work of Gianni Berengo Gardin with the Leica Hall of Fame Award. The ceremony in Rome is followed by a presentation of Gardin’s works as part of the exhibition Grandi Maestri. 100 Anni di Fotografia Leica, which will be on display at the city’s Complesso del Vittoriano Ala Brasini from 16 November 2017 to 18 February 2018.

Berengo Gardin (born on 10 October 1930) has significantly shaped photojournalism in Italy. Primarily dedicated to reportage, architectural and travel photography, he has published some 200 books and received numerous awards, including the Prix Brassaï 1990 and the Leica Oskar Barnack Award 1995.

Among his most exceptional publications is the book Morire di Classe of 1969 – a collection of profound images intended to shed light on the country’s institutions for the mentally ill. The book sparked a fierce debate, which eventually led to reforms within Italy’s healthcare system.

At the Leica Hall of Fame Awards ceremony, Gianni Berengo Gardin will be presented with a specially constructed, all-mechanical Leica M-A with lens.

The Leica Hall of Fame Award was established in 2011, and is designed to recognise the contributions of outstanding artists to the medium of photography as well as the Leica brand. It has previously been presented to Steve McCurry, Barbara Klemm, Nick Út, René Burri, Thomas Hoepker, Ara Güler and Joel Meyerowitz.
