06/16/2018, To mark the opening of Leitz Park III on 15 June 2018, Leica introduced two new cameras that could hardly be more different: the first special-edition model of the Leica M10, and a new compact camera – the C-Lux (Typ 1546).
The Leica M10 ‘Edition Zagato’ (which is complemented by a Summilux 35 mm f/1.4 Asph and red, full-grain leather carrier strap) is limited to 250 units, and priced at 18.800 euros. The camera’s outer shell, top plate and base plate are made of aluminium, making the special-edition model 70 grams lighter than its serial counterpart – though their technical specifications remain identical.
The finely grooved surface that characterises the camera’s design was previously featured on a special edition of Leica’s Ultravid 8×32 binoculars, which was released in 2015 as Leica’s first collaboration with the Italian automobile designer. For those who enjoy investing in a coordinated look: a few units of the Ultravid 8×32 ‘Edition Zagato’ binoculars, which retail at 3,450 euros, are still available.
Alternatively, with a price tag of 970 euros – around one-twentieth of the M10 ‘Edition Zagato’ – the new C-Lux (Typ 1546) represents a very attractive option for both established and budding Leica photographers. Leica’s first compact camera in four years offers a scope of technological features that leaves little to be desired.
These include a 1-inch sensor with 20.1-MP effective resolution and an ISO sensitivity of 12.800 (expandable to ISO 25.600), a DC Vario-Elmar 8.8–132 mm f/3.3–6.4 Asph lens (full-frame equivalent: 24–360 mm), five-axis image stabilisation system, an EVF with 2.33 million pixels, 4K video recording, and a touchscreen display. The new C-Lux will be available from mid-July 2018, along with an extensive range of accessories (such as carrier straps, hand straps, various camera bags, protectors and soft pouches) that correspond with the camera’s two colour variations of Midnight Blue and Light Gold.
