Photography with Distinction

05/06/2017, The Grand Prix Images Vevey 2017/2018 is awarded to Hungarian photographer Peter Puklus, while the Prix du Livre Images Vevey goes to Jono Rotman (New Zealand). The Leica Reportage Prize honours the work of French photographer Emeric Lhuisset.

The jury was unanimous in selecting Peter Puklus for the Grand Prix 2017/18. In his series The Hero Mother – How to Build a House, the Hungarian photographer conveys universal themes of family ties in a unique and compelling visual language. The CHF 40,000 (approx. € 37,000) award enables the winning artist to complete the previously unpublished series within a timespan of one year. The finalised project will be presented at the next edition of the Images Vevey Festival, which takes place from 8 to 30 September 2018.

The Prix du Livre 2017 goes to Jono Rotman (born 1974) for his series Mongrel Mob, which is the result of an almost decade-long research and documentary process. The project draws attention to the little-known subject of indigenous Maori motorcycle gang culture in his home country of New Zealand. Sponsored by the Amis d’Images association, the Prix du Livre Images Vevey supports the book project with CHF 10,000 (approx. € 9,000).

This year’s Leica Prize (Reportage) is awarded to French photographer Emeric Lhuisset. In his series L’autre Rive he reinterprets both the documentary format and current photo essay topics – turning his focus to crisis zones in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as addressing the subjects of migration and the lives of refugees in Europe.
