Yearning for Paradise

01/25/2018, Two new book releases by Textem Publishers explore the concept of paradisiacal places as the backdrop for our internal narratives.

A state of melancholy, loneliness and deep longing: the Portuguese term Saudade cannot be reduced to a straightforward explanation. In 2016, Hamburg-based musician and photographer Jakob Sinn decided to set out in Lisbon in search of his very own interpretation. The small, intimate book he created takes the reader on a journey, leaving us not with a literal definition of what Saudade means, but a profound sense of what it feels like.

Carsten Rabe’s series Amerika juxtaposes clear, brilliant colours with hazy, grey depictions of deterioration. In these images, the American Dream has taken a sinister turn, and we see another side of a place that once seemed like the embodiment of hope. The idea of America becomes a backdrop, a fictional realm – glowing and bright, yet at the same time bleak, blurred and ominous. Rabe’s images pay homage to the myth while simultaneously throwing it into question.
