What is Belgium all about and what makes the country unique? How do its people go about their daily lives? Cédric Gerbehaye’s series reveals a deep understanding and insight into his homeland. The Belgian photographer has captured fleeting moments in a country defined by political, societal and economic challenges; and at the same time, his pictures emphasize a great sensibility and care for his fellow countrymen.

While studying journalism, Gerbehaye realized that photography was his particular form of expression. Born in Belgium in 1977, he first travelled to Israel and Palestine in 2002 to document the sense of disappointment and revolt that followed the Oslo Accords. He joined Agence VU’ and started to work in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The photographic essay Congo in Limbo received several international recognitions. He then started to work in South Sudan and charts the birth of the country, and its first setbacks. In 2013 he is invited in residency by the Festival Images Singulières in Sète. With D’entre eux Gerbehaye turned to his homeland Belgium. Four books have appeared to date: Congo in Limbo (2010), Land of Cush (2013), Sète#13 (2013) and D’entre eux(2015).
