Good-luck charm, memento, coping mechanism: in his latest book, reportage photographer Jan Grarup focuses on the tattoos worn by Danish soldiers on deployment in Afghanistan. Along with their daily lives, he has captured the soldiers’ personal stories – which are forever etched into their skin.

Jan Grarup

Born in Denmark in 1968, Jan Grarup studied journalism and photography at the university of Aarhus. Grarup has spent 25 years covering war and crisis situations around the world, first as a correspondent, and now as a photographer. His work has been honoured with many awards, including the 2011 Leica Oskar Barnack Award and a first place at the 2013 World Press Photo Award. Jan Grarup lives in Copenhagen and is represented by the Laif Agency.
