Jim Rakete

02/18/2015, Jim Rakete is currently one of the world's most renowned portrait photographers. For over 40 years, his pictures have introduced us to the great German-speaking and international personalities of music and film, many of whom he had in front of his camera at the beginning of their careers, before they had their big breakthroughs.

During summer last year, Rakete photographed the complete Burgtheater ensemble in a sequence of portraits. The setting he chose for the series, that took a number of weeks to complete, was a rehearsal stage with just a few props on it, located on the third floor of the theatre, not far from the Burg's art gallery. The resulting seventy seven pictures, titled Jim Rakete. Die Burg. Innenleben (Jim Rakate. The Burg. Inner Life), are being exhibited for the first time at the Leica Gallery in Vienna.

The portraits were photographed with a Leica M Monochrom and offer a glimpse in black and white into the inner life of one of the great German-speaking theatres. Just like during the rehearsals for a play, we encounter the actors at eye level and, as in the best stage productions, the personalities and the roles of the performers truly merge into one.

The photographs in the exhibition are for sale.
