The so-called hobos of America travel the country on freight trains illegally. Following the American Civil War, penniless soldiers had to get home somehow, which gave rise to the idea of travelling by rail without using passengers trains. This resulted in the birth of a whole hobo culture that still exists today – a life caught between romantic adventure and poverty.
