When Hugo Chavez died in 2013, Venezuela was in turmoil. The leader of the Bolivarian Revolution with his idea of 21st century socialism, had always had a polarizing impact, and after his death the country was in a state of upheaval. Frustration over the shortages of basic food supplies as well as the high levels of criminality and inflation led to numerous protests against Chavez’s successor, Nicolás Maduro, and question the legacy left behind by El Comandante.

Alejandro Cegarra

Born in 1989 in Caracas, Venezuela, where he still lives today. After studying photography, he worked as a photographer for the local newspaper Ultimas Noticias. Allejandro Cegarra started working freelance for the Associated Press in 2014 – in the same year he won the Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award.
